Spring Family Photos Without the Stress: What to Expect
Spring always sounds like the perfect time for family photos.
The light is softer. Everything feels fresh again. Life slows down just enough to breathe.
And then… the stress sneaks in.
What to wear, whether the kids will cooperate, if it’s worth the effort, if it will actually feel enjoyable.
If you’ve been wanting spring family photos but feel overwhelmed by the idea of them, this is for you. Here’s what you can realistically expect— and why it doesn’t have to feel like a big production.
You Don’t Need to Be “On”
Spring sessions with me aren’t about performing. No session is.
You don’t need perfect behavior, you don’t need to practice smiles or rehearse body language. The goal isn’t a flawless photo— I don’t know about you guys, but those “picture perfect” family photos lack all personality. I don’t want that for you guys— I want to bottle up all the personality and quirks and distinct mannerisms that make your family who they are so that you can look at these photos for years to come and remember it all.
Kids are allowed to move, talk, wander, engage. Parents are allowed to relax instead of managing every single second. You guys are allowed to be yourselves.
When pressure drops, real moments show up. Every time.
We Keep Things Simple on Purpose
Spring already brings enough decisions— so your photo session shouldn’t add to that. I’ll help guide:
what to wear (nothing complicated or overly styled, we want to be able to move and feel like ourselves)
where to shoot (often close to home or a familiar spot, there’s so many gorgeous options)
how the session will flow (from booking to gallery delivery!)
Most sessions feel more a like a walk or playful outing together than a formal photo shoot. That’s intentional.
Expect Movement, Not Standing Still
If you’re imagining everyone lined up and smiling at the camera the entire time— good news! That’s not what this is.
Spring sessions are built around movement and play, encouraging small interactions to happen naturally. Movement helps kids relax and gives parents something to do instead of worrying about the camera, and it’s in the in-between moments where the good stuff lives.
Your Kids Don’t Need to Be in a “Good Mood”
This is a big one.
Kids don’t need to arrive happy, calm or cooperative. It’s great if they do, but that’s not always the case and that’s ok! It’s not always a bad omen of a difficult session. They just need some space to warm up. We’ll get there.
Sessions are absolutely kid lead, meaning that I always give options and allow for kids to choose how they want to interact with their family as well as the environment. If it’s working for them, it’s working for me. We will not force anything and instead will be flexible and encourage the kids to make the session their own.
My sessions allow room for all of that. An often, those real emotions turn into honest images that truly reflect your crew.
The Session is Shorter Than You Think
Most families are surprised by how quickly it goes. The saying “time flies when you’re having fun” definitely applies. Because we’re not forcing moments, things flow more easily and time moves quickly. This means:
less burnout for kids
less pressure for parents
better energy overall
I know some people— ahem, dads— see “one hour photo session” and are immediately convinced there’s no way the family can take photos for a whole hour. But let me tell you, it’s just like going to the park. We’ll get in the flow and before you know it, 60 minutes will be up and it will be time to pack up and head out.
What You’ll Walk Away With
You won’t just get “spring photos”. You’ll get:
images that feel like this season of your family
moments you didn’t realize were meaningful until you saw them
proof that life doesn’t have to be perfect to be worth remembering
These are the kinds of photos that grow more valuable over time.
Spring Is a Season Worth Documenting
You don’t need a reason beyond wanting to remember this. This version of your kids, this stage of your family, this moment before everything shifts again.
Spring passes quickly— heck, life passes quickly, but the way it feels doesn’t have to. If you want help deciding whether a spring session is right for your family— or which type of session fits you best— I’m always happy to talk it through.
Low pressure, always.
