Front Yard Sessions: Why You’ll Love Photos Taken Right at Home

There’s something really special about photos taken right where life actually happens.

Not a perfectly, almost sterile styled studio.

Not a “smile and look at the camera” kind of location.

Just your front yard. Your porch. Your driveway. Your space.

Front Yard sessions have become one of my favorite ways to photograph families, and honestly? They’re often my clients’ favorite too— especially the ones who swore they were “awkward”, had wild kids, or were nervous about the whole thing.

And, here’s why:

Your Kids Feel like Themselves (Because They’re In Their Sanctuary)

When kids are in their own space, everything changes.

They know where to run, and where to hop over the cracks in the driveway on their scooters, where you keep the bubble juice, where to fall into the rhythm of everyday life.

There’s no warming up period where they’re unsure or overwhelmed. They’re already comfortable— and that comfort shows up in the photos as ease, laughter, and real expressions that showcase their true personalities.

And for the parents? That means less tress before we even start.

You Don’t Have to Go Anywhere

This might be the most underrated benefit.

No loading everyone into the car. No racing the clock to get somewhere on time. No hoping nobody spills something en route.

You step outside, we take photos, and then you go right back inside and keep living your day as you normally would. Meals and naps can stay on schedule, life can continue it’s normal rhythm.

It’s simple, and simple is good.

Your Home Becomes Part of the Story

Years from now, these photos won’t just show what you looked like. They’ll show:

  • the house your kids grew up in

  • the porch where you rocked your babies

  • the driveway where scooters and bikes laid strewn over and where the chalk never seemed to completely wash off

  • the tree that changed along with the seasons and grew alongside your family

The context matters more than people realize— especially once time has moved on.

Front Yard sessions quietly preserve a season of life, not just a singular moment.

The Photos Feel Natural (Because Nothing is Forced)

These sessions are not about standing still or performing for the camera.

They’re all about:

  • being together in your sanctuary

  • running and tumbling in the grass

  • perserving the sound of your littles squeals while being pushed in the tree swing

  • sitting on the steps, watching the shadows grow

  • immortalizing the way your littles run barefoot on the driveway

  • creating a time capsule of how you spend your afternoons playing soccer in the yard

I’ll gently guide when needed, but mostly I’m paying attention to how your family naturally connects— and photographing that.

The result is photos that feel like you, not like a version of you trying to “do it right.”

Perfect for Families Who Think They’re Not Cut Out for a Photo Session

If you’ve ever thought “my kids won’t cooperate”, or “we’re awkward”, or “I just don’t know if we’re capable of taking photos like others”, Front Yard sessions tend to change minds.

There’s a special kind of magic that happens when you’re in your own space. And is a comforting reassurance for a lot of families.

When expectations drop, real moments show up. All those are always the ones people end up loving the most— you know, the real ones.

If a Front Yard Session Right for You?

There sessions are a great fit if you:

  • want low-pressure, meaningful photos

  • love the idea of documenting real life

  • want your kids to feel comfortable immediately

  • value connection over perfection

You don’t need a special reason, you don’t need a big milestone. You don’t need permission to document your life. But if you need the push, this is your permission. Document your life. Document your days and all that you hold dear.
